Discover Santorini red grape varieties, including Mavrotragano, Mandilaria and Voudomato, shaped by volcanic soil and a unique island philosophy.
Red Wines of Santorini
While Santorini is internationally famous for its white wines, the island also produces rare and distinctive red wines that share a clear philosophy: low yields, respect for the land and honest expression of volcanic terroir. Santorini red wines are not made for power or excess, but for balance, character and authenticity.
The Philosophy Behind Santorini Red Grapes
Producing red wine in Santorini is challenging. The intense sun, strong winds and lack of water make red grape cultivation difficult, which is why red varieties are planted in very limited quantities. As a result, Santorini red wines are rare, expressive and deeply connected to the island’s environment.
The philosophy behind Santorini red grapes is simple: quality over quantity, tradition over intervention and terroir above all.
Mavrotragano – The Flagship Red Grape of Santorini
Mavrotragano is the most important red grape variety of Santorini. Once nearly extinct, it was revived thanks to the efforts of local winemakers who recognized its potential. Today, Mavrotragano produces structured wines with deep color, firm tannins and remarkable aging potential.
Grown on volcanic soil, Mavrotragano expresses minerality, dark fruit, spice and freshness, making it one of Greece’s most exciting red wines.
Mandilaria – Structure & Tradition
Mandilaria is a traditional red grape variety historically used in blends and sweet wines, including Vinsanto. Known for its strong structure and high tannins, Mandilaria requires careful handling to achieve balance.
When grown and vinified properly in Santorini, Mandilaria contributes depth, structure and a rustic character that reflects the island’s raw landscape.
Voudomato – The Indigenous Expression
Voudomato is a rare indigenous red grape variety found almost exclusively in Santorini. Softer and more approachable than Mavrotragano and Mandilaria, Voudomato offers fresh acidity, red fruit aromas and gentle tannins.
This variety represents the lighter, more elegant side of Santorini red wines and is often enjoyed young.
Volcanic Terroir & Red Wine Identity
Just like Santorini’s white wines, red varieties grow on volcanic soil rich in ash and pumice, resulting in:
- Lower alcohol levels
- Natural freshness
- Mineral and earthy notes
- Clear sense of place
Santorini red wines reflect restraint, authenticity and respect for nature rather than international styles.
