The Story of Santorini

The Story of Santorini

A Volcano That Created One of the Most Beautiful Islands in the World

Santorini is not just famous for its sunsets and white villages.
It is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world shaped by powerful natural forces and thousands of years of history.

Long ago, the island was known as Kalliste, meaning “the most beautiful one.”
Later, it became Stroggyli, “the circular island,” because of its original round shape.

The Volcanic Eruption That Changed Everything

Around 1600 BC, one of the strongest volcanic eruptions in human history transformed the island forever.

The center of the island collapsed into the sea, creating the dramatic caldera — the steep cliffs rising above the deep blue Aegean Sea that define Santorini today.

From this eruption came:

• the iconic caldera views
• black and red sand beaches
• fertile volcanic soil
• the island’s unique landscape

What was once destruction became extraordinary beauty.

From Kalliste to Stroggyli to Thera and Santorini

After ancient settlements, the island became known as Thera, a name still used in historical and cultural references today.

Centuries later, Venetian sailors named the island after a church dedicated to Saint Irene , Santa Irini.
Over time, this evolved into the name Santorini.

Each name marks a chapter of the island’s story:

Kalliste — beauty
Stroggyli — shape and volcanic origins
Thera — ancient history
Santorini — the island known around the world today

More Than a Beautiful View

Before tourism, Santorini was a hardworking island.

Families lived from vineyards, agriculture, trade and small industries , including textile and weaving workshops that supported local communities for generations.

Santorini was never only beautiful.
It was strong and resilient.

Seeing Santorini with New Eyes

When you stand at the edge of the caldera, you are standing inside a collapsed volcano.

Understanding this makes every view deeper, every village more meaningful and every sunset more powerful.

Santorini is not only one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
It is one of the most fascinating.
